Stam: “Yann deserved that one!”

29 August 2016

Jaap: "If he's not scoring, he's not happy. We like that."

Striker Yann Kermorgant scored his first goal of the season to clinch three points for the Royals and cap an excellent display leading the line in Cardiff with an 89th minute winner.

Kermorgant struck the crossbar, had an effort cleared off the line and saw a spectacular overhead well saved in our 2-2 draw with Brighton at Madejski Stadium the previous week, but he wasn't to be denied in the Welsh capital.

"From the start of pre-season, he’s done very well...he’s been working very hard for us," manager Jaap Stam said after the win over Paul Trollope's hosts.

"He’s shown in training sessions he can score a goal – he’s got a lot of power and he has real qualities both in and out of the box. He can link the play, he is good in the air if we need to play the long ball, he wins his headers all over the pitch to be fair.

"Eventually we want to have him in the box more, because he’s reliable on the crosses he gets – and the rest of the players know that, they are trying to feed him and get the ball to him.

"In Cardiff, the ball got to him, he finished it off, and with that goal we won the game. So naturally he’s very happy to have scored...but everyone in the club is happy because he has deserved one."

Injuries to Dom Samuel, Deniss Rakels, Yakou Meite and Joseph Mendes have meant Kermorgant has acted as the spearhead in Stam's side for much of the opening month of the season. And now, with a goal to his name, he will be hoping the floodgates have opened.

"In the style of football we play, I think he can be a very valuable player for us, in linking the play but also in finishing.

"Against Brighton last weekend he had a couple of very good chances, it didn’t go in. And he’s the type of player who wants to score every time - and if he’s not scoring then he’s moaning.

"That’s what we like in players, players who want to do well, who need to do well.

"He knows what you need to bring to games. As a manager, you need to find a mixture of players, players with a lot of talent and a lot of quality and some players with experience…players who can help others out.

"Yann is that type of player. He knows what to do at the right time. And if he keeps on playing like that, he’s going to be scoring goals."
