Midfielder in squad to face Norway; two more Young Lions callsWe are pleased to announce that John Swift has been selected for Gareth Southgate’s England Under-21 squad for the forthcoming international fixture against Norway in Colchester.
Swift could win the latest of many England caps when the Young Lions host their Norwegian counterparts at the Colchester Community Stadium on Tuesday 6th September, kicking off at 5.45pm.
Southgate’s side currently sit on top of the table in their 2017 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying group – if they still sit at the summit ahead of Switzerland, Norway, Kazakhstan and Bosnia in three games’ time, they will automatically qualify for the finals tournament in Poland next summer.
Midfielder Swift, who joined us this summer from Chelsea, has had an eye-catching start to the new campaign – which included a debut winner against Preston, scoring from a free-kick in our last league meeting with Brighton, assisting Joey van den Berg’s opener against Plymouth and winning a penalty at Newcastle.
And his early-season form has resulted in another call-up to the England camp – he has already represented his country on 35 occasions across six different age-groups. That included a Toulon Tournament triumph earlier this year in France, as the Young Lions took the top prize.
He is one of several current Royals that have England youth caps to their names – Jonathan Bond, Jake Cooper, George Evans, Jordan Obita, Dominic Samuel, Callum Harriott, Liam Moore and Tyler Blackett have all also pulled on an England jersey at youth level.
We wish John and his England teammates the very best of luck in their upcoming match.

It is all part of the preparation for next summer’s Under-20 World Cup, which takes place in South Korea. England booked their spot at the tournament by reaching the semi-finals of the Under-19 European Championships last year.
The stopper made his international bow earlier this summer, keeping the Mexico attack at bay during his 45 minutes on the field in a friendly fixture across the Atlantic.

And Danny Loader, who began his scholarship in our Under-18s this season and has featured in both of their games against West Ham and Aston Villa so far, was called up to the England Under-16 squad to meet Belgium at St George’s Park on Thursday.
12 months ago, he was also involved at U16 level as he fired two past USA in a friendly meeting.
Congratulations to John, Luke and Danny on their call-ups to their respective England squads.
