Striker's delight with three points for the RoyalsA first goal of the new season for striker Yann Kermorgant left the striker delighted – and purely because it meant sending the Royals into the international weekend with three points.
Yann, selfless as ever, was far more concerned with the team’s achievement rather than any personal glory… and indeed the 1-0 win against hosts Cardiff City in South Wales was well-merited by a strong team display.
“It’s a great feeling,” said the striker after the match. “We really wanted to get the three points today because I think we have been a little bit unlucky in the last few games. We have played well but unfortunately didn’t get the results we wanted.
“So I think today was justice for what we have done in the last couple of games. To score the winner in the last few minutes was a great feeling.
“The gaffer is confident, and we are as well, so we are just going to carry on working. It is a new style of play with some new players as well – it will take time, but we have done very well since the start of the season. Unfortunately we didn’t get the results we wanted every time, but I think if we carry on in with the same spirit and keep playing well, we will get more points.
“When you keep a clean sheet, you will always have a chance to score a goal – as we did today. We had a few more to be fair – they kept a few out on the line. As long as you believe and you push until the end, it is never finished. So if you keep the clean sheet, there will always be a chance to score a winner.”
It was a cross by substitute Jordan Obita which deflected into Kermorgant’s path on the penalty spot… the forward took one touch to control and another to lash past the goalkeeper and send the travelling fans wild.
“I just wanted to try to kick it as soon as possible to try and score the goal!” Yann said of his goal. “It is so important when there is only five minutes left, as there isn’t much time for any more chances. We had a couple of great chances saved on the line so when we had that late chance, we had to score.
“It was a big relief because I knew we were close to the end of the game and we really wanted to go into the international break with a win – and I know this one will really please my dad!
“It is a great feeling and we deserved the three points – it is a big achievement. Now we have two weeks to prepare for the next month – it’s going to be another crazy month with lots of games, and hopefully we will get lots of points.”
