Stam hails Kelly impact

Manager reflects on youngster’s breakthrough

2016 has seen quite a rise for Liam Kelly.  The midfield man was on loan with Bath City at the end of last season in the National League South… but this season, under Jaap Stam, he has already made 10 appearances for the first team.

That has included starts in each of our last two Championship fixtures in Leeds and Blackburn, and 90 minutes at the Emirates against Arsenal in the EFL Cup.

And after a string-pulling appearance against Rovers last Saturday, gaffer Jaap Stam had plenty of kind words to say about the playmaker.

“He is a quality player,” Stam said after the match.  “He’s a player who has got great skills, he is comfortable on the ball, he can go past players as well.

“His passing and technique is world class, and he’s a player who can bring something extra to this team – as he showed today.

”He’s not the biggest, but he’s strong on the ball in turning away from players – if you can turn away from a player, then you create a 3v2 or a 2v1 situation somewhere on the pitch and the opposition has to make a decision as to what to do.”
