Stam hails qualities of ‘real professional’ Kermorgant

Gaffer discusses French forward after return from injury

Yann Kermorgant was welcomed back into the fold after a month on the sidelines with injury for our fixture against Sheffield Wednesday – manager Jaap Stam underlined the importance of having him around the team.

The Frenchman made a valuable contribution from the bench by leaping to nod on Ali Al-Habsi’s long punt, and in doing so earning an assist for Roy Beerens’ second goal against the Owls.

But it was his selfless attitude in the dressing room that Stam picked out as a key attribute, as one of the team’s elder statesmen.

“Yann is very strong in the air – his timing is very good, and with him in the midfield and flicking the ball on for Roy, he was away,” said Stam.

“And Yann is a real professional.   He always wants to play, he always wants to perform, he wants to score goals himself – but he wants to be important for the team.

“That’s not just for the first XI, but for the squad.  You saw it today – he’s talking to players before they go out, even when he’s not playing himself.

“Then on the pitch he is talking with players, and he can hold the ball up when he gets it, and he wins his headers defensively to do a job.  So it is very important to have him back in the squad.”
