Youngsters heading to St Mary’s for Trophy test

A preview of our Checkatrade Trophy second round tie

Southampton vs Reading
St Mary's Stadium
Checkatrade Trophy
Wednesday 21st December 2016, 7pm

The Royals visit St Mary’s for a 7pm kick-off on Wednesday evening with the ambition of progressing to the third round of the Checkatrade Trophy.

Southampton, however, should offer tough opposition.  The two teams have already met at Under-23 level this season, as a couple of goals by Josh Sims – who has since debuted for the Saints’ senior side – helped the hosts to earn a 3-1 win at Staplewood.

The Saints’ youngsters also topped their Checkatrade Trophy group, thanks to wins against senior sides from Colchester and Crawley, ensuring they would have a home tie at this stage.

But the winner of Wednesday’s game will visit Yeovil Town – if the Royals progress, it’ll offer a chance to exact some revenge after a defeat to the Glovers at Madejski Stadium in the final group game.

Tickets for this fixture are priced £5 Adults, £3 65 & Over and £1 17 & Under and are on advanced sale until midday on matchday.  Tickets will also be available for travelling fans at the Ticket Office at St Mary's for the same price.

Lee Collins will be the man in the middle for this one - his first senior game involving either of these teams.  His last match was at the weekend when a Cambridge squad which included Royals loanee Sean Long defeated Crewe.

Michael Webb and Robert Dabbs are the assistants, while Charles Breakspear is the fourth official.
