Manager on U18 captain’s seat on the benchRoyals boss Brian McDermott discussed the first-team involvement of Under-18 captain Josh Barrett; the midfield playmaker took a seat on the first-team bench for a second time against Burnley, having previously been on the bench away at Preston.
Barrett is part of an Academy side that currently sit second in the Barclays Under-18 Premier League table, and who will visit Stamford Bridge in the FA Youth Cup quarter-final after seeing off Wolves in the previous round.
“I watched the game up at Wolves and our Under-18s won 3-0,” said Brian. “He scored one goal and made two.
“He has trained with us for the past two or three training sessions. I’m absolutely delighted to have him involved with us. I’m sure he’s got a big future for Reading Football Club.
“I love taking an interest in the younger players and the Academy. They are great people that run the Academy, who work their socks off – and we’ve got young players coming through now.
“The Academy at our club can take massive credit and in my opinions it is one of the best academies in the country.”
