Manager gives injury update ahead of Madejski Stadium meeting
Royals boss Brian McDermott provided an injury update ahead of the weekend’s meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Madejski Stadium.
Reading were without Aaron Tshibola at Ipswich in midweek, after picking up an injury against Walsall, and George Evans was also unavailable at Portman Road.
“We’ve got no new concerns – Aaron Tshibola is out, he’s got an issue with his hamstring, which is a bit longer term unfortunately,” said Royals boss McDermott. “It’ll be a longer term injury with Tish – I won’t put a timeframe on it, but he’ll be out for a while.
“There are couple of small knocks, but everyone else should be fine. George Evans could possibly be available – I think he’ll train fully on Friday, but we’ll have to wait and see on that.”
International clearance has been received for new arrival Deniss Rakels – however the manager is conscious of the need for him to work his way back to fitness. Cracovia, his previous club, had been on a winter break in the Ekstraklasa since mid-December, meaning it is a little while since he has seen competitive action.
He continued, “Deniss Rakels has been training with the fitness guys, trying to get himself up to speed. He had a mini break in Poland, so we’ll get him fit as soon as can.
“He doesn’t know our players particularly well and he’s coming from a different country – we’ve got to give him time to adapt.”
Garath McCleary was back in action against Ipswich – he came off the bench to score from the spot, having missed a few weeks with a hamstring strain.
“It was great to see Garath back – and that he picked up the penalty and scored it,” Brian continued. “He’s a major threat for us; he has great pace and great character, and it’s great to get him back amongst the squad.”
