Brian talks squad selection ahead of fifth-round clash

McDermott talks availability ahead of West Brom meeting

Both Yann Kermorgant and George Evans will be unavailable for selection this weekend in the FA Cup fifth round meeting with West Bromwich Albion – their appearances in the competition for Bournemouth and Walsall respectively mean that they are cup-tied for the meeting at Madejski Stadium.

But Brian McDermott knows that that might open doors for other players to be involved this weekend and to have an impact for the Royals.  “That’s why you have a squad of players,” the manager explained.

“It’s important that we’ve got a good strong squad which we have and players that are ready to come in and play.”

Danny Williams’ absence through injury last weekend against Burnley was the first time this season that he had not been in a matchday squad this season, while former Baggies striker Matej Vydra – who leads the FA Cup goalscoring charts this season with six – was also unavailable for the Clarets clash.

“We’ll see on Danny and Matej – Matej has done a little more and might come into training today,” continued Brian.  “Danny won’t train until Friday, so it’ll be a tall order for him.

“We have to look after both of those players for the long term as well.  But if we could get one or both back into the squad then that would be great.  But we’ll see.”
