Reading FC work alongside Road Safety Analysis to host Drive Start workshopThe Drive Start scheme took place for the first time at Reading FC Community Trust’s headquarters at Madejski Stadium. The daylong session was run in conjunction with Safer Roads Berkshire, West Berkshire Council, Admiral Young Drivers and Quikfit.
The emphasis of the course is to encourage 15 – 19 year olds to learn the life skills and processes relevant for learning to drive and ensuring they are aware that becoming a driver, is more than just passing a test.
The day long course consisted of the below sessions:
• Car mechanics (with Quikfit)
• Impairment (Alcohol and drugs)
• Physical Driving (with Admiral Young Drivers)
• Emergency braking
• Scene of an incident
• The finances of driving (insurance, buying a car etc.)
• Distractions (mobile phones etc.)
The whole day is very hands on and full of fun but an important message is underlined throughout. “We’re demonstrating what being a good driver really looks like” says Dan Campsall the director of Safer Roads Berkshire. An additional focus is on the financial side of learning to drive as well as buying and insuring a car and ensuring a complete understanding of all the costs involved.
Reading FC became part of the scheme as part of their community involvement and have committed to hosting the event several more times throughout the year continuing to provide a safe environment for young drivers to learn.
The next two Drive Start events hosted at the Madejski Stadium will be Thursday 2nd June and Thursday 27th October.
