Community arm welcome Frances O’Grady to Madejski StadiumTUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady recently visited Reading FC Community Trust and our ‘ground-breaking’ learning centre at Madejski Stadium.
The Community Trust has been working closely with the Professional Footballers’ Association to improve learning opportunities for local people and engage hard-to-reach communities.
Frances took a tour of the centre and to meet staff and learners. Those taking part in the visit included former professional footballer Iffy Onuora, who now is a PFA education instructor, and Riz Rehman who co-ordinates the PFA’s work with marginalised communities in Southern England.
Frances said: “Football has a unique power to bring people together and transform lives. Reading’s work with the PFA is ground-breaking, and shows the value of unions working with clubs to serve local communities.
“We need more schemes like this throughout the country. I’m a huge fan of what is happening here.”
Graham Dougall, Chairman of the Reading FC Community Trust, added: “We were delighted to welcome the TUC to see at first-hand how we are working closely with the PFA to support the valuable work we are doing with disadvantaged young people in the Thames Valley area.”
