Reading youngsters draw Chelsea in next round

Reading Under-18s can look forward to facing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the next round of the FA Youth Cup, following the Blues’ 4-1 win over AFC Wimbledon in the fifth round on Tuesday evening.

The tie between the two sides will be a meeting between first and second in the Barclays U18 Premier League South, with the Royals currently five points behind top of the table Chelsea.

Dates and ticket prices for the fixture will be confirmed in due course for what promises to be an exciting away trip for the Reading Academy.

The Royals, who had previously knocked out Sheffield United and Fulham to reach the fifth round, overcame Wolves 3-0 at Molineux on Friday to book their place in the quarter-finals.

Forward Sam Smith bagged a brace on a wet evening in the Black Country, with captain Josh Barrett netting the other in an impressive win.

Chelsea, who have won the FA Youth Cup in three of the last four seasons, have prevailed in all of their FA Youth Cup ties this season by big scorelines. The Blues cruised past Huddersfield town in round three with a 6-1 win at home to set up a tie with Manchester United, who they brushed aside in a 5-1 victory.

Reading and Chelsea met as recently as January 30th in the league, on that occasion the Royals came away with the spoils, winning 2-0 at Hogwood Park, with Chelsea taking the points when the two sides met earlier in the season winning by the same scoreline.

The winner of the tie at Stamford Bridge will set up a Semi-final which will be decided over two legs, with either Blackburn Rovers, Luton Town or Preston North End.
