Reading slip to narrow defeat away from homeThe Royals were beaten 2-0 in a close game away to Liverpool at Lookers Vauxhall Stadium on Sunday afternoon, in the Barclays U21 Premier League.
Liverpool’s Brooks Lennon gave the Reds the lead with a first-half strike which saw the home side head into half time 1-0 up.
Within three minutes of the restart, Harry Wilson added to the opener by winning and converting a penalty, with Liverpool able to hold on to claim all three points.
The Royals were looking most threatening from set pieces forcing a couple of half chances from corners, but nothing to test Daniel Ward in the Liverpool goal.
Midway through the first half Liverpool broke the deadlock when Alex O’Hanlon dispatched a long ball from deep to the supporting run of Connor Randall along the right. The full-back picked out Lennon at the second attempt, allowing the American to sweep a shot into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.
The Royals continued to threaten aerially but could not force a goal in response with the Reds seeing the game through to half time.
As the second half got under way there was a set-back for Reading as they looked to get back into the game, conceding a penalty and giving Liverpool the chance to double their lead.
As Wilson sprinted through on goal, Dominic Hyam knocked him to the ground and handing Liverpool a chance to take control of the game. The winger tucked his spot-kick past the reach of Reading stopper Stuart Moore and into the bottom right corner.
The visitors made attacking changes to try to get back into the contest, with Andrija Novakovich putting the ball just wide of the left hand post from close range on the 72nd minute after he got in behind Tiago Ilori.
Late on Randall managed to prevent Tariqe Fosu’s dangerous delivery from generating a goal as the Royals queued up at the back post to finish as Reading rallied to get back in the game late on, but it was not to be.
