Our new brew with West Berkshire Brewery gets its name!In conjunction with club partner West Berkshire Brewery and official sponsor Waitrose, we launched a competition at the start of January to ask our fans to name the brand new official ale of Reading Football Club.
We asked for your suggestions of what you could see yourself asking for at the bar: “A pint of…” And we were overwhelmed with entries, each with their own unique Royals focus. Some of the honourable mentions included: ‘Sir John’s’, ‘Royale’, ‘1871’ and ‘SJM’.
After weighing up all the suggestions, the winning entry which we selected was: 106!
106 is a number that conjures up a lot of memories for Royals supporters. A decade ago, we set the record for the most points accrued in a Football League season as we romped to the Championship title. Never before, and never since, has any other team matched the 106 points that we gathered in the 2005/06 campaign.
“A pint of 106” was such a popular choice that we had to put all the entries into a hat and randomly select two winners. We are delighted to announce that the winners are Amy Brown and Mike Challis, who now have the opportunity to leave their stamp on a part of the Royals legacy, all thanks to West Berkshire Brewery and Waitrose.
Amy Brown, a passionate Royal, said: “It feels great to be able to say I had a part in making something which will be forever associated with the club and our fantastic record breaking team!” Mike Challis, also a dedicated lifelong Reading fan, said: “I'm delighted and proud to take part in such an exciting process. What a fantastic club – involving their fanbase in shaping a small part of its legacy. I cannot wait to get started, cheers!”
Amy and Mike will now get to visit the Yattendon-based brewery to shape the taste of the ale itself, as well as design the labels which you will see on the shelves of Waitrose, in local pubs and served up here at Madejski Stadium on matchdays.
We’re looking forward to cracking open the first barrel of 106!
