Ahead of the game: Walsall come to town for Cup clash

29 January 2016

A preview of the Saddlers’ FA Cup visit to Madejski Stadium

Reading vs Walsall
FA Cup, fourth round
Madejski Stadium
Saturday 30th January 2016, 3pm

We had to fight from goal down in Huddersfield, and then from two behind at our replay at Madejski Stadium… but we secured a place in the fourth round with a 5-2 win at the Terriers expense to set up the date with Walsall.

The Saddlers have already downed three opponents from higher tiers on the football pyramid in cup competition this season, as well as standing well in the League 1 table at present.

It is the first time in a decade that Saturday’s guests have made this stage – but it’s an equally big fixture for the Royals, as we look to go a step closer to repeating last season’s feat.

A place in the fifth round is at stake… but if the teams can’t be separated after 90 minutes, it’ll mean a midweek visit to the Bescot to settle the game.

If you are travelling via Basingstoke Road, Whitley Wood Lane, Imperial Way Roundabout (near Lidl Supermarket), there is a warning of road works for the next 3 weeks with 4-way traffic lights which will cause delays in the area, and so supporters should allow extra time if parking in the Imperial Way (Worton Grange) car park area.

Peter Bankes is our referee on Saturday – his second visit to Madejski Stadium this season, following our 1-0 win against Blackburn on Brian McDermott’s first fixture back in charge.  He also oversaw the 2-1 defeat on the opening weekend at Birmingham.

Running the lines as assistants will be Amy Fearn and Adrian Tranter, whilst Brendan Malone is on duty as fourth official.

According to Football League title sponsors Sky Bet, we are odds-on for a win in this fixture at 5/6, while visitors Walsall are 10/3 – and the price is 5/2 for the game to go to a replay.

Matej Vydra, hat-trick hero in the third round replay, is 5/1 to net the opening goal of the fixture, while Jake Cooper – who headed in our equaliser against Sheffield Wednesday last weekend – is 22/1 to score the final goal of the match.
