New Signing ready to embark on next chapter at Reading
We caught up with new January transfer window signing George Evans moments after he put pen to paper for the Royals until 2019. The 21-year-old midfielder joins Reading from Premier League giants Manchester City where he came through the Academy from the tender age of six!
Evans was openly excited about signing for Brian McDermott’s men and, despite interest from a number of other clubs in January, the youngster was never in doubt about which team he wanted to join - the former Sky Blue was always keen to pull on the famous blue and white hoops when given the opportunity.
“It’s a massive club I’m really excited about the opportunity and I can’t wait to get going now,” Evans told Reading FC Player yesterday evening.
“At the start of January, when I was on loan at Walsall, I heard a few clubs were interested in me and asking about me making a permanent move - and when I heard Reading were interested it was a move I really wanted to make.”
The young midfielder who, has enjoyed several spells out on loan to League One clubs to gain valuable first team experience in recent years, is still looking to develop as a player and feels Reading is a place that can help him improve and grow.
“Reading have some good young footballers here and I feel it’s a place that can help me develop as a player,” Evans continued. “I’m a box to box midfielder that can also play as a holding midfielder as well.
“I’ve tried to add more goals to my game this season with Walsall which is something I’ve managed to do and I’m hoping to continue that here by getting a few goals and really helping the team out.
“I’ve enjoyed my time out on loan to get experience of first team football, and I’m ready to get going now. There are some experienced players here that know a lot about the game and it will be great to learn from them so I’m really excited to pull on the Reading shirt.”
The Royals midfielder admitted that after a brief chat with Brian McDermott he was sure Reading was the place for him, with the manager himself being a big draw in his decision and assuring him that Madejski Stadium was the right place to take the next step in his career.
“The manager came to watch me a few times and obviously getting good reports back is really pleasing for me. When I met with Brian he told me his plan and what he was wanting to do at Reading which is something I want to be part of.
“I started at the age of about six or seven at Man City so I’ve had a great education there, and it has been a fantastic club for me. But I’m looking forward to a new challenge now.”
Evans was cup-tied for last night’s FA Cup victory over Huddersfield Town and will be ineligible when we host Walsall in the Fourth Round at the end of the month, but he could be involved when we host Sheffield Wednesday at home this Saturday. You can still get your tickets for another big Championship clash against the in-form Owls this weekend –
