Vydra reflects on first career treble against Huddersfield

After the 5 – 2 FA Cup victory over Huddersfield, hat-trick hero Matej Vydra was quick to praise his teammates and thank the fans for their support. The Royals, who  went two goals down within the opening 20 minutes came from behind in a thrilling third round replay at Madejski Stadium.

“We were surprised by the quick two goals from Huddersfield, but the fans were great and we stuck to our style of football,” said Vydra.

The key turning point of the game came in the 26th minute when Huddersfield’s Johnathan Hogg was shown a red card for fouling the nimble Matej Vydra on the edge of the area. Lucas Piazon stepped up to score from the resulting free kick to fire the Royals back into contention.

“He tried to tackle me, but he didn’t touch the ball…. it was a red card” said Reading’s top scorer post game.

Matej Vydra was not surprised to see the ball bend over the wall and into the Huddersfield goal. “At training and before the game Lucas is always practicing his free-kicks, he showed how good he is tonight”.

Vydra’s three goals were the first hat-trick in the 23 year olds’ career and boosts his current tally to six this season, four of which have come in the FA Cup. The striker expressed his gratitude to the rest of the team.

“I wanted to say thank you to my teammates, they always support me and tell me the goals are going to come… and tonight they did”.

“It was a difficult situation we were playing in the FA Cup replay at home and losing 2 – 0 after 20 minutes. The red card helped our situation and we tried to keep the ball and play our style. Sometimes it’s difficult to play against 10 men but we did well and got the result we needed. Our fans will be happy with the 5 goals”.

The Royals will be hoping to carry on the momentum and take it into Saturday’s game against Sheffield Wednesday something the Czech Republic international was quick to point out.

“Saturday is the next important game and we want to win again and take the momentum into the league”.

Saturday’s home game against the Owls kicks off at 15:00 at the Mad Stad. To get your tickets and for more information click here
