Premier League striker completes Madejski Stadium switchReading Football Club are delighted to confirm the permanent transfer of French striker Yann Kermorgant who, arriving from Premier League side AFC Bournemouth to complete his medical earlier today, has this evening put pen to paper on a contract which will keep him at Madejski Stadium until the summer of 2017.
The former Leicester City and Charlton Athletic striker has a goalscoring record boasting 60 goals notched in 137 starts in English football, enjoying the most prolific spells of his career during the last two Championship seasons.
Kermorgant scored 17 goals across his 2013-14 campaign and then fired another 17 the following year to help Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth achieve promotion to the Premier League in his first full season on the south coast.
Manager Brian McDermott said, “I’m delighted to get Yann, a player we have known about for a long time. In Yann we have an experienced striker with an excellent record and a player who will be able to work with our young players at the club and be a good centre-forward in the team we are trying to develop here at Reading. I am really looking forward to working with him.”
The Brittany-born striker began his career in his native France, representing Stade Rennais at youth level, then Vannes, Chatellerault, Grenoble and finally Stade Reims, whom he joined in the summer of 2007 and went on to captain.
In 2009, he arrived in England with Leicester City, signing as a free agent and scoring his first goal in a 2-0 home win over Middlesbrough as the Foxes reached the Championship play-offs in his maiden campaign at the King Power Stadium.
After a season on loan back in France with Ligue 1 side AC Arles-Avignon, Kermorgant put pen to paper on a two-year deal at The Valley and as an Addick he really found his form in front of goal.
He scored only 13 minutes into his Charlton career, an equaliser from the bench at MK Dons in September 2011, and Yann would go on to score a total of 12 goals to help Chris Powell’s men earn the League One title and promotion to the second tier in his first season at Athletic.
A firm fans’ favourite, he signed a new contract that summer and scored the first, of 12 more goals fired in 2012-13, against his former side - helping the Addicks to a 2-1 win against Leicester City that August before ending the Championship season as Charlton’s joint top scorer.
He scored an acrobatic effort against Bournemouth on the opening day of the following season and in January 2014 the Cherries swooped to seal his signature. On full debut, he promptly netted a hat-trick in a 5-0 drubbing of Doncaster Rovers and he also found a way past Reading stopper Alex McCarthy that season to help the south coast side achieve a 3-1 home win over the Royals two years ago.
It got even better the following year when he scored 17 times across all competitions for a Bournemouth side bound for the Premier League for the first time in their history – and a spectacular bicycle kick scored against Ipswich saw him nominated for Championship Goal of the Year last season.
His final Bournemouth appearance came in the top flight side’s 3-0 win against Norwich last weekend. Now, having signed for the Royals for an undisclosed fee, the 6’1” striker has committed the next 18 months of his career to Brian McDermott’s Royals and, although he is cup-tied after featuring in the Cherries’ 2-1 victory at Birmingham earlier this month, Kermorgant is eligible to make his Reading debut when we host Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.
Chief Executive Nigel Howe said, “Following the arrival of George Evans yesterday evening, we are absolutely delighted to have fought off the interest of a number of other clubs to secure the services of striker Yann Kermorgant. He brings both a wealth of experience and an impressive goalscoring record to Reading Football Club and we look forward to welcoming him into our squad here at Madejski Stadium.”
