Under-11s win prestigious tournament out in Estoril

Reading’s Academy received yet more silverware last weekend when our Under-11s emerged as tournament winners in the IberCup competition out in Estoril, Portugal.

The IberCup competition is a very highly-regarded youth football tournament which, since its inception, has seen more than 70 countries represented.

Every year more than 30,000 players, boys and girls aged between 9 and 18 years old, participate in IberCup tournaments during a week of competition between some of the best teams in the world and this year the Royals took home the title at Under-11 level.

The tournament began with group stages and a round robin series of fixtures before going into a knockout phase.

Reading were grouped with Drogheda Boys FC (Republic of Ireland) and two Portuguese sides GS Loures and SC Leiria e Marrazes in Group C – and after a 10-0 demolition of our Irish opponents, the Royals fired eight and then nine more past their local opposition to top their group without a goal conceded.

They went on to comprehensively beat on Pro Touch Soccer Academy in the first knockout round, before knocking out Olympique Lyonnais in the quarter-finals, securing a 3-0 win over their high-profile French opponents late last Friday evening.

Clubs such as Sevilla, Sporting Lisbon and Deportivo la Coruna had falled away in the same tournament and CF Belenenses, a Portuguese Primeira Liga outfit at first team level, were beaten by Reading's youngsters 5-2 in the semi-final to set up an Under-11 final against Japanese top flight club Yokohama Marinos – and the Royals were crowned champions on Saturday evening thanks to a fantastic 3-0 win over their J-League opponents!

Congratulations to all the players and coaches who played a part in another Academy triumph at Reading. And thank you for representing your club so professionally out in Portugal.
