Reading assistant manager Andries Ulderink is looking forward to the Royals' opening pre-season fixture...The Royals travel to Boreham Wood FC on Saturday afternoon, to face the Vanarama National League side in their first game of pre-season.
The match will be Jaap Stam’s first game in charge of the club, as he takes a first look at his team in action. Assistant manager Andries Ulderink is looking forward to the fixture and says Jaap, himself and Said Bakkati are settling in well at Reading after their first two weeks.
“We’ve been training now for 10 or 11 days, and we’ve been to London too on a day off sightseeing,” said Ulderink. “The people in the club and people we’ve met have all helped us which has been very nice.
“The players are doing very well and are getting in shape for the start of the season. In training we’ve done a lot of possession football and passing and they’re getting used to our style of play. The team’s attitude is great so we’re all looking forward to our first game on Saturday.”
The Royals coach says the fixture will not only be used for fitness but also as an opportunity to look at the team and try out different systems, which the squad have worked on over the last couple of weeks in training.
“We will be using a lot of players throughout the game,” revealed Ulderink. “We want to use the game to develop our way of playing and we also want to try and see all the players throughout the pre-season games to give them a fair chance to show us their skills.
“Players need to be fit but they also need to get used to the way we want to play, Ulderink continued. “These are the two main areas we will be focusing on. Everyone will get their minutes to show us what their qualities are.”
Tickets for Saturday’s game will be for sale on the gate at Boreham Wood and it will be a 3:00pm kick-off at Meadow Park as Reading begin their preparation for the 2016/17 season.
