Gaffer reflects on Holland experience“We have had a very good week,” reflected manager Jaap Stam as the Reading squad called time on their pre-season stay in Holland.
“The accommodation where we stayed was very good, the pitches where we trained were very nice, the weather was good… the ingredients were all there to have a successful week!
“The training sessions which we have had have been very good as well. The boys have worked very, very hard, I must say. And we won our game which is also very important.”
The game in question was a 3-1 win against Saudi top-flight side Al-Taawoun in Arnhem; it allowed the gaffer to see the fruit of the training ground in action.
But as well as the benefits of getting together on the training ground, the manager felt that the time spent together away from the pitch was just as important.
“Everybody knows that we are trying to play a certain system with the team at the moment,” Stam continued.
“So you keep working on that; we’re trying to get better and better every time, improve the team, and improve the players individually. They need to get stronger physically as well.
“We have seen a lot of players in action and we have seen that we have a lot of talent in the group.
“And as a team, it is also very good to stay away together for a week. You get to talk to each other, and occasionally you go and do something different together – the boys had a quiz on Thursday evening for example! It has been very good.”
