Manager delighted to get Beerens in

16 July 2016

Stam excited to welcome winger into the team

Manager Jaap Stam revealed his delight at being able to make Roy Beerens his latest arrival – in particular because he was not initially on the radar.

When a deal broke down to take him from Hertha Berlin to another club, the Royals acted quickly to snap up the fleet-footed wide-man… and the gaffer is delighted to have been able to land his man.

“I knew him as a player but we didn’t really pay a lot of attention towards him because we thought he was going to be going somewhere else,” explained manager Stam.

“But when that deal fell through we went in there and tried to get him.  And he was very excited to come over to Reading as well – so we’re very happy with that.”

And the prospect of welcoming someone of Beerens’ qualities is an exciting one for the manager.

The Dutchman has played plenty of top-tier football in the Netherlands and Germany, as well as being capped twice at senior level for his country, and the manager revealed that he had been searching for a player in his mould to bring to Madejski Stadium.

“Roy is a player with a lot of qualities,” Stam said.  “He is the type of winger that we have been looking at and the type that we need in the squad.  He is very creative, he is quick, he can get past players and can create chances and score goals.

“We’re very excited to have him in the squad and it is very good for the team.  That doesn’t mean that he’ll necessarily come in and be playing straight away – everybody needs to work very hard, including Roy, and he knows that as well.

“But he is a quality player, and we are looking for quality players because we have a lot of games ahead.”
