Play-off winners to prepare for League One against the RoyalsThe final first team pre-season friendly has been confirmed – Reading will travel to Kingsmeadow to take on promoted AFC Wimbledon on Saturday 23rd July, kick-off 3pm.
Neal Ardley’s men were celebrating play-off glory at Wembley on Bank Holiday Monday after the Dons confirmed their place in League One with a 2-0 win over Plymouth Argyle – second half goals from Lyle Taylor and Adebayo Akinfenwa were enough to end the Pilgrims’ challenge.
The win saw the Dons achieve their sixth promotion since the club’s formation in 2002 and 2016-17 will be the first season they have ever spent in the third tier – so a game against Championship opposition two weeks before the campaign kicks off will form a key part of their final summer preparations.
Four years ago, Reading fired seven past a Dons side in pre-season; an Adam Le Fondre double began proceedings in July 2012, before Michail Antonio and Jordan Obita weighed in. And then a Simon Church treble ensured the scoreline would be comprehensive at Kingsmeadow that afternoon.
However, the Dons finished in 7th place in League Two this season, accumulating 75 points and beating Accrington Stanley to earn a trip to Wembley and ultimately play-off success – all of which suggests they will be no pushovers when the Royals head to South London next month.
The Royals’ full pre-season schedule has now been announced:
