Royals to host the Pilgrims in the EFL Cup

Devon club to make midweek trip to Berkshire

Plymouth Argyle will travel to Berkshire to contest the first round of the EFL Cup, following Wednesday afternoon’s draw.  The tie will take place at Madejski Stadium on Tuesday 9th August, kicking off at 8pm.

Following the announcement of the 46 Sky Bet Championship fixtures on Wednesday morning, the Pilgrims are added as 47th game on the schedule for the new campaign.

Derek Adams’ men came close to stepping up to League 1 last season – ultimately though it was Wembley heartache for Royals loanee Craig Tanner and his fellow Pilgrims, who were unable to overcome AFC Wimbledon at the home of football.

Argyle are twice semi-finalists in the competition – most recently in 1974, when Manchester City were 3-1 winners over two legs.  Nine years prior, Leicester City had secured a 4-2 aggregate score to book a place in the final against Chelsea.

More recently though, they haven’t fared so well.  Tanner netted late in the first round against Gillingham last year for Plymouth – only for Gillingham to hit two in reply in the final five minutes, extending their stretch to 20 first-round defeats in the past 23 matches.

In the meantime, we have been to the competition’s quarter-final twice in that time; Leeds were victors in the last eight in 1996, before Middlesbrough knocked us out at the same stage two years later.

Dates, kick-off times and ticket details will all be announced in due course.
