Undefeated Royals emerge as National U10 tournament victorsOur Academy continues to thrive at all levels.
Our Under-10s side took on the very best in the country at Warwick University last weekend and emerged triumphant at the end of the Premier League National Tournament 2016!
Each game consisted of two 10-minute halves, seven-a-side, played on 60x40 yard pitches - and the three winners of three sizeable groups would go forward alongside the best runner-up to contest the semi-finals at the end of each group phase.
A total of 30 teams took part and Reading were one of only three sides representing teams outside of the Premier League - Blackburn and Newcastle the only other Championship clubs fielding U10 teams in the tournament.
The Royals remained unbeaten throughout the event, topping the group with a 3-0 win over Southampton, a 4-1 victory over Sunderland, 5-0 and 4-0 scorelines against Burnley and Bournemouth, 3-1 wins over Middlesbrough and Arsenal, a 4-1 triumph against Liverpool and a 3-0 victory against eventual finalists Derby County.
The only points dropped in the group stage were two in a 3-3 draw against Leicester City - a game in which the Royals came from three goals down to earn a draw! - but Reading made it to the semi-finals with ease and promptly knocked Everton out with a 2-0 win.
Meeting the Rams in the Final, Reading's youngsters were held to 1-1 scoreline and the tournament would be decided on penalties. The future of our club is in good hands when it comes to spotkicks it seems - the Royals won the shootout 3-2 to lift the trophy!
Congratulations to all involved in the winning of such a prestigious tournament - and we look forward to seeing some of our stars come through the ranks at Reading in the future!
