‘Setting principles’ important to Gunter

Royals defender says there is plenty to play for

Reading defender Chris Gunter wants the Royals to 'set some principles' in the closing months of the seasons, including when the team travel to Brighton on Tuesday evening in the Sky Bet Championship.

The Welsh international feels that despite Reading’s FA Cup exit, there is still plenty for the Royals squad to play for when they face the Seagulls; making the play-off places looks a big ask with ten games remaining, but Gunter wants to build a winning habit to take into the next campaign.

“We need to dust ourselves off, and be ready to go for Brighton,” said Gunter.  “There’s a lot of people in our squad that are playing for something between now and the end of the season.

“Whether it’s people who are out of contract, people that are on loan, or boys that want to get a place for the Euros in the summer, we want to finish this season as strongly as we can.”

After Reading’s narrow loss at the hands of Premier League Crystal Palace in the FA Cup quarter-final on Friday, the Reading full-back was keen to stress that the squad were highly motivated to go out and get a result against Brighton.

“We want to go there and perform and turn round a week where we haven’t won a game,” insisted the right-back. “Just because we’ve lost in the FA Cup it doesn’t mean we can just let the season peter out.

“If we want to go up then the least we can do is to start setting some principles for next year if we can’t make the play-offs this year.

"We’ve got to regroup; we know it will be a tough game away at Brighton on Tuesday night,” Gunter continued. “It’s our duty to go out there and perform as well as we can, for us players it’s our livelihoods and we want to carry on and get a result.”
