U18s go into top tier for the final phase!

1 March 2016

Final fixtures confirmed for Academy side

After securing some superb results this season, Reading’s Under-18s will now face off against seven of the best sides in the country in the final phase of the Barclays Under-18 Premier League!

Reading finished second to Chelsea in the Barclays Under-18 Premier League (South) after 22 games – a top-four finish means that the Royals will play a round-robin competition against the three other southern based teams (West Ham, Chelsea and Fulham) as well as the four qualifiers from the northern section (Blackburn, Man City, Liverpool and Everton).  The middle-tiered clubs (placed 5 to 8) from each division will take a similar former, as will the sides which finished in the bottom four in the north and south leagues.

By being placed in the ‘merit league’, our boys will now start on an evening footing again with the rest of the eight sides as they all vie to be crowned champions of the Under-18 Premier League 2015/16.

Our first fixture of the final stage takes place behind closed doors at Hogwood Park this Saturday – Everton, who finished runners-up to Man City in the northern division on goal difference, will be the first visitors.  Man City, Blackburn and Fulham also visit our training ground, while our away trips are at Chelsea, Liverpool and West Ham.  Please note that our Under-18 fixtures at Hogwood Park are not open to the public.

It has been a notable season for the Under-18s so far – the FA Youth Cup campaign saw our boys narrowly edged out by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Friday at the quarter-final stage.  From the current crop, captain Josh Barrett has already made three appearances on the bench so far for the first-team too!
