Williams wonder-strike shortlisted for Goal of the Year!

22 March 2016

Danny’s hit against Blackburn amongst best of 2015

Danny Williams’ stunning strike against Blackburn Rovers is in with a shout of being named the Football League’s Goal of the Year 2015, after being named in the ten-goal shortlist for the best strikes of the calendar year!

You can register your vote to give Danny the chance of taking the award by clicking here.

The American midfielder notched the very first goal of Brian McDermott’s current reign at Madejski Stadium – despite the unlikeliest of angles, Williams latched on to Hal Robson-Kanu’s flick-on and beat Rovers stopper Jason Steele with a drive that was packing power and pinpoint precision.

In context, it had plenty of importance too – it was the sole goal in the 1-0 win against our guests from Lancashire, and in doing so ended a losing-streak of four games and kicked off our manager’s new spell in style.

Take a look at the goal from a few different angles above, as well as hearing what Danny, Brian and teammate Stephen Quinn had to say about the goal that afternoon!  The gaffer called it ‘top drawer’, and midfielder teammate Quinn called it ‘Van Basten-esque’… high praise for a stunning strike, and a goal well worthy of making the Football League’s shortlist of 10!

Danny faces stiff opposition – this is the shortlist in full…
