Boho-Sayo fires debut goal but Royals undone by GunnersThe newly-promoted Reading Women side lost their WSL1 opener at Arsenal on Wednesday night, despite a league debut goal for Jade Boho-Sayo against the Gunners!
The Royals travelled to Borehamwood to face Arsenal in their opening fixture of the Women’s Super League 1 season, taking on some of the biggest stars in the women's game - such as Alex Scott, Jordan Nobbs and Fara Williams, all of whom played a part for Arsenal in Wednesday night's 3-1 win.
Just after half an hour, Dominique Janssen drove a low shot past Grace Moloney from the edge of the area to break the deadlock and early in the second half the home side doubled their advantage when 21-year-old Nigeria forwa Asisat Oshoala - who had signed for the Gunners from Liverpool in the close season - latched on to Danielle Carter’s pass and rounded Moloney for 2-0.
Boho-Sayo stooped low to head the Royals back into the fixture and Reading threatened an equaliser, but Carter headed home from a corner 20 minutes from time to clinch the three points.
“We always knew it was going to be a tough game coming here, but although the result is not what we wanted, there are lots of positives to take from the performance," said Royals midfielder Charlie Estcourt.
“We know what we need to improve on for the next game and that’s what we’ll focus on now. We had some chances and we know in this league we’ve got to be more clinical. We are disappointed with the result, but it’s about building now.
“We competed with Arsenal, who are going to be one of the best teams in the league. We know there are lots of tough games to come in the season but we think that we can compete and definitely be in and around all of the teams this season."

The Royals, of course, got their domestic season underway last weekend with an impressive 2-0 win over Millwall Lionesses at Adams Park in the Women’s FA Cup - goals from Boho-Sayo and Emma Follis earning Kelly Chambers's side a place in the quarter-finals of the competition.
Reading now face three more away fixtures - travelling to Sunderland on Saturday before taking on the Black Cats again in the last eight of the FA Cup the following weekend. Reading’s final away journey before their first WSL1 home game of the season will be away to Notts County on the 24th April - and then the blue and white hoops’ first home league game of 2016 will be another midweek evening clash with Arsenal, on April 27th at Adams Park.
