U18s boss David Dodds talks through the Academy’s summer plansAssistant Academy Manager David Dodds spoke to Reading FC Player HD discussing the summer plans for our Under-18s this close season.
“We’re working through asa group untill Wednesday 18th May, and then there will be a few staff conferences and some benchmark testing with the Premier League,” Dodds explained.
“The players will be given an end of season review and we’ll have a thorough discussion with their parents as well.
“Ed Franklin from the Sports Science team will then give them a summer programme and, following that, they will have a two week break. Then they will all be into their off-season regime - it’s important they come back in good shape and hit the ground running.”
Explaining the plans for the U18s when they return, Dodds said “We hope to head off on a two week tour to Spain - at their equivalent of St George’s Park - where we’ll be playing teams such as Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Real Vallecano and Getafe, so it will be a great opportunity to pit our wits against top drawer continental teams this summer.”
“All these different experiences this summer will stand the lads in good stead, but of course I’m hoping a few will stay behind to train with the Under-21s and the first team when training starts again ahead of the new season, meaning we may take some of our younger lads with us to Spain instead.”
