Craig books Wembley date with ArgyleReading loanee Craig Tanner helped Plymouth Argyle to a play-off final victory against Portsmouth on Sunday evening… which means that the 21-year-old has booked a trip to Wembley!
The teams went into the fixture tied at 2-2 from the first leg at Fratton Park – but the Home Park meeting proven a much more conservative affair in the goalscoring department. Another heatedly-contested game had passed the 90-minute mark without a goal being scored, and it looked for all the world to be heading into extra time.
Tanner, introduced with 15 minutes left to play, put in an inch-perfect delivery for striker Jake Jervis… but the forward’s close-range header hit the base of the upright as Pompey survived. And so it looked like Craig and his teammates were all set for a further 30 minutes of action, and potentially the possibility of penalties.
But in added time, the deadlock was finally broken by defender Peter Hartley as he headed in Graham Carey’s corner… sending the Devon club into frenzy and booking a pilgrimage to Wembley for the Pilgrims, for just the second time in their history!
And now, if Tariqe Fosu and Accrington can overturn a first-leg deficit when they meet AFC Wimbledon in their return leg in Lancashire, there will be a Royals loanee on either side of the teamsheet in the final! Stanley’s second leg takes place this Wednesday evening, kicking off at 7.45pm at the Crown Ground.
Argyle will meet the winners of that tie at the national stadium on Monday 30th May for a 3pm kick-off. Our congratulations go to Craig and Argyle on their victory.
