Tennai Watson pens two-year contract

Academy product signs with Royals until summer 2018

The Royals can announce that 19-year-old defender Tennai Watson has today committed his future to Reading Football Club by signing a two-year deal at Madejski Stadium, which will keep him at the club until the summer of 2018.

Academy product Watson, has featured heavily for the U21s this season as Martin Kuhl’s side finished 9th in the top tier of the Barclays U21 Premier League.

The full-back started in a number of key victories for the Royals throughout the campaign, including the 1-0 victory over Leicester City at Hogwood Park, a 2-0 away win against Everton and a closely fought 3-2 win over Middlesbrough.

The young defender was part of the U18s side that reached the FA Youth Cup semi-final back in 2014, narrowly losing out over two legs to Fulham two years ago.

In recent weeks, Tennai has been training with the first team squad and was given squad number 43 ahead of the Royals’ Sky Bet Championship clash against Leeds at Elland Road. The defender was named on the bench by Brian McDermott for three of the last four first team games this season.

“Tennai is one of a number of really good young players we have going forward, another product of our Academy, another one of our own. So I’m delighted he has signed a new deal with us,” said McDermott.
