Date set for St Mary’s trip in Checkatrade Trophy

Youngsters set for midweek meeting in Hampshire

Reading’s youngsters will visit Southampton on Wednesday 21st December in the second round of the Checkatrade Trophy, kicking off at 7pm at St Mary’s.

The Saints’ Category 1 Academy side topped their group ahead of Crawley, Charlton and Colchester in order to secure their place in the knock-out stages – the Royals were denied top spot by Yeovil, but had already secured passage thanks to a win at Bristol Rovers and a bonus point shoot-out win in Portsmouth.

Reading and Southampton are two of the eight Category 1 Academy teams to have progressed – a further eight were knocked out in their groups.  And our second-round meeting will be the final matchup of the Southern Section – the other seven fixtures all take place next week.

The two teams have met in the Premier League 2 this season once before – Southampton’s Under-23s were 3-1 winners that evening at Staplewood as Josh Sims, who made a man-of-the-match debut for the Saints’ first-team yesterday, bagged a couple of goals.

Tickets for this fixture will be priced at £5 for Adults, £3 for Over-65s and £1 for Under-18s.  Southampton will also be giving away free programmes to the first 1,500 supporters through the turnstiles as well, including visiting fans.

Selling arrangements will be arranged and announced for this game in due course.
