Royals reach Round Two of Checkatrade Trophy

9 November 2016

Martin Kuhl's young side progress ahead of Glovers finale

The Royals will take on League Two's Yeovil Town at Madejski Stadium this evening, knowing that their progression into Round Two of the tournament is already certain!

Portsmouth and Bristol Rovers battled it out at Fratton Park last night and an 88th minute goal from Kal Naismith earned the home side all three points to keep their Checkatrade Trophy hopes alive.

That victory took Pompey to four points, with Bristol Rovers languishing at the foot of the table with two points - neither of the teams can now catch Reading on five points, the Royals topping the table going into their final group game this evening.

But there is still plenty to play for tonight. The Glovers need a result to be certain of their route into Round Two as goal difference could play into Pompey's hands should Martin Kuhl's men win tonight.

And with the first placed team guaranteed a home tie in the next round, Reading will be very keen to take at least a point tonight - a draw would seal top spot and a Madejski Stadium encounter for the Royals in the first knockout stage next month.

A point would be enough for Reading, because even if Yeovil won a bonus point after a stalemate and a subsequent penalty shootout, Reading would remain top of Southern Group A on goals scored.

Whatever happens though, Reading will be in the hat for the draw for Round Two - it is due to take place at approximately 10.30am on Thursday and it will be broadcast live on Sky Sports News.
