Gaffer on Bristol City and recovering playersRoyals boss Jaap Stam knows that his side may need to be flexible again when they meet Bristol City at Madejski Stadium this Saturday, if they want to get the better of their opponents and take a fifth straight win.
“I’ve seen them play a couple of different systems – so you’re not totally sure on Saturday how they will be set up during the game,” said the gaffer in his pre-match press call.
“So we need to work on different systems and how they can play, and how we can set up defensively – as well as when we have the ball.
“I know how they like to play, how their players are and what they like to do. Of course this week we are working on that and looking and where we can hurt them.
“We’re looking at what we can do in our style of play to make it different for them, and of course making sure that we don’t lose ourselves.”
He also gave an update on progress for a number of players who have been missing recently through injury.
“Anssi Jaakkola is back in training – not full training, but he has started to train on the pitch again,” continued Stam. “Stephen Quinn is still out with a knee injury, and John Swift is still out as everybody knows.
“Yann Kermorgant is out with a knee injury – he is improving, but he isn’t yet doing work on the pitch. It’s not a muscular problem – it’s an issue with his knee, and he has had an injection and it reacted well. Hopefully next week he’ll be able to do some running outside.
“Joey van den Berg has been out running on the pitch and working hard. He hasn’t joined into the group sessions but he has been running with the physiotherapist and he’s getting there. There’s a small chance that he could be involved this weekend.”
