Gaffer on the Royals so far…The Royals have recently been attracting a little bit more attention than usual – that’ll happen when you rise to third in the league!
It’s still early days in the Championship season, as we all know. But gaffer Jaap Stam doesn’t think that a shift in attention towards his Reading side is problematic – quite conversely, he feels is a just reward for the kinds of performances and results they have accrued so far this year.
“There is no pressure – we know what to do and how we want to play,” said the gaffer. “We’re not Barcelona – everybody knows that! We’re Reading, and we’ve got a certain way of playing.
“That’s what we do, and if people mention it and compare it to other teams, maybe that’s a good thing. But we keep on doing what we do – working on the team and trying to get results.
“Up until now, everything is going quite well. But there is another game this weekend, and we need to start all over again on Saturday. That’s what we’re working on.
“It doesn’t bother me that people are taking notice – I think it’s a good thing, because the players and the squad deserve it because they are working very hard for it. They compete, they win their games, and I think if you do well then you deserve some attention.
“After a lot of games I give the players my compliments as well because the players need to show themselves and perform, and that’s what they’re doing. They are doing a great job and it’s normal that they will get some attention because of that.”
Indeed, they have registered four back-to-back wins heading into this weekend’s meeting with Bristol City.
And the gaffer underlined that only hard work on the training pitch and from 3pm on Saturday will give them a chance to take the tally to five.
“Everybody is improving, and they are enjoying themselves – that is important when you’re playing football,” he continued.
“And because of that we are getting results. They are all very eager to learn, to perform, to do well. You need that in your team. The spirit is great and everybody is willing to give a lot of energy to win games.
“We’re very happy, but we can still improve. There are a lot of games to play and that’s why we’re focusing on every game like it’s the Champions League final. We are not in a position to think that we can win any games easily – every game we have to work very hard to get a result and that’s what we’re trying to do.
“They can play football and they have some quality players, so we are aware of that. In this game, we start from zero. We need to do well and work very hard to get three points.”
