Midfielder selected for Young Lions dutyMidfield maestro John Swift has been called up to the England Under-21 squad once again for the forthcoming international break – and this time he could feature in a couple of high-profile friendlies against Italy and France.
The first of the two exhibition matches takes place at St Mary’s in Southampton on Thursday 10th November (kick-off 7.45pm) where the Azzurrini – managed by former Italian international Luigi Di Biagio – will be visitors.
And then it’s a trip across the Channel to face Les Bleuets at Stade Robert Bobin in Bondoufle, just outside Paris. That fixture takes place on Monday 14th November, kicking off at 7.45pm GMT.
Midfield man Swift has been impressing for both club and country since joining the Royals in the summer. In domestic affairs, the former Chelsea midfielder has netted four times for us and landed Player of the Month awards from our fans’ votes for both August and September… and he took that form into his international involvement for England last month.
It was his corking strike against Bosnia-Herzegovina which began a 5-0 rout in the last of their Euro 2017 qualifiers – and these friendly fixtures against two of Europe’s strongest sides will stand Aidy Boothroyd’s boys in good stead as they continue their preparation for next summer’s visit to Poland.
We’ve got a game away in Wigan this weekend before Swift can turn his attention to duty with the Young Lions… but then it’s off to St George’s Park for a bit of preparation ahead of Thursday’s first friendly, where he’ll link up with another star-studded squad full of the brightest English talent.
The squad in full is as follows:
Goalkeepers: Angus Gunn (Manchester City), Jonny Mitchell (Derby County), Jordan Pickford (Sunderland).
Defenders: Calum Chambers (Middlesbrough, loan from Arsenal), Brendan Galloway (West Bromwich Albion, loan from Everton), Kortney Hause (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Rob Holding (Arsenal), Dominic Iorfa (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Alfie Mawson (Swansea City), Jack Stephens (Southampton).
Midfielders: Lewis Baker (Vitesse Arnhem, loan from Chelsea), Nathaniel Chalobah (Chelsea), Isaac Hayden (Newcastle United), Will Hughes (Derby County), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea), John Swift (Reading), James Ward-Prowse (Southampton), Harry Winks (Tottenham Hotspur).
