1985/86 squad come together at Forest fixtureIt was our great pleasure to welcome 11 members of the team that won promotion as champions of Division Three in the 1985/86 season on Saturday – and understandably they were given a tremendous ovation from the home crowd at Madejski Stadium at half-time!
It was a star-studded line-up of heroes from our Elm Park era, and they took to the pitch at the interval with the trophy that they first lifted over 30 years ago.
They also hold a piece of footballing history; no other team, before or since, has been able to match the 13 consecutive wins that they strung together at the start of that campaign… that stood them in pretty good stead to lift silverware the following May!
Ian Branfoot – the gaffer from that time – was in attendance, as were our all-time record goalscorer Trevor Senior and leading appearance-maker Martin Hicks. And that’s not to mention Jerry Williams, Mark White, Gary Peters, Gary Westwood, Steve Wood, Steve Richardson, former youth coach Stewart Henderson and our current Academy coach Michael Gilkes!
It was a chance for some old faces to enjoy a reunion in hospitality at Madejski Stadium and a matchday in each other’s company… as well as to reminisce about their time as a Royal and share some old stories from that era.
And thankfully they were treated to three points from their modern-day counterparts as we witnessed a 2-0 win against visitors Nottingham Forest!
Keep your eyes peeled on readingfc.co.uk later this week for some interviews with members of that squad!
