U18s go joint top with win at Spurs!

14 November 2016

Royals level with Chelsea at West Ham at table's top

Our Under-18s recorded a 2-1 win away to Tottenham Hotspur to do the double over Spurs and go level on points with league leaders Chelsea and West Ham at the weekend.

In the pouring rain at Hotspur Way on Saturday morning, Jordan Holsgrove had already gone close with a set piece before the Royals took the lead; Teddy Howe's driven effort deflected off the sliding body of Spurs defender Joy Mukena and flew past keeper Alfie Whiteman in the Tottenham goal.

Dylan Duncan struck the post and Kazaiah Sterling was denied by the legs of Royals goalkeeper Liam Driscoll twice in quick succession and the home side were level on the stroke of half-time - the ball breaking for Duncan inside the Royals box and the Tottenham forward sending the teams in 1-1 at the break.

Reading had hit the woodwork too - Ben House’s diving header from Howe’s cross cannoning off the right post in the first half, and Whiteman had to save from Rollinson as David Dodds' side looked to re-take the lead.

And just before the hour, that advantage was restored - Ademola Shokunbi’s ball in from the right was deflected past his own goalkeeper by the luckless Mukena.

Ramarni Medford-Smith nearly put the game to bed with a header that was somehow kept out and Danny Loader came close to making it 3-1 late in the game. But the points were coming back to Berkshire.

Our U18s have won seven of their 12 games to date in the U18 Premier League South and this result saw Reading do the double of their London rivals following a 4-3 win at Hogwood Park earlier this season.

Both Chelsea and West Ham have a game in hand on us, while Arsenal could leapfrog the Royals if they win their game in hand - but, having won three of our last four, Dodds' young side will be looking forward to a home game agaisnt Aston Villa this weekend as well as an FA Youth Cup clash at home to Manchester City next month!
