Title-winners at our fixture against ForestWe’re delighted to welcome 11 members of our 1985/86 Third Division title-winning side to Madejski Stadium on Saturday when we meet Nottingham Forest in our Championship fixture.
As well as wrapping up the title at a canter, that side also holds a piece of history which no other team has matched – 13 straight wins to open their league campaign.
Never before, nor since, has another team in the Football League registered a perfect run of results in that period, meaning that the Royals hold another unique and proud record.
And this Saturday, we’ll welcome some of our former greats back home. As well as manager Ian Branfoot, captain (and all-time record appearance maker) Martin Hicks and all-time leading scorer Trevor Senior, we’ll also be joined by Jerry Williams, Stewart Henderson, Mark White, Gary Peters, Gary Westwood, Steve Wood, Steve Richardson and our current Academy coach Michael Gilkes!
Set against the backdrop of some troubled times for Reading and English football in the mid-1980s, our Royals side grasped the nettle and took their division by storm to earn a place in football’s second tier.
We'll profile each of the 11 attendees later this week on the website, 30 years on… as well as telling the full story of that remarkable campaign in this weekend's edition of 'The Royal', our matchday programme!
