Gaffer provides fitness update ahead of QPR trip

Manager Jaap Stam revealed that he should have a number of players are nearing a return from injury ahead of this weekend’s visit to Queens Park Rangers.

Tyler Blackett has completed his suspension and returns to availability, and Joey van den Berg should be an option again after missing the Derby fixture with illness.  And a couple of the longer-term injuries in Jake Cooper and Yakou Meite have each been making good progress with their respective injuries.

“Joey had been ill, but he is back in shape and he is in training,” Stam said.  “Jake Cooper has been out for a long time, but he is back in training – it was his first training session with the team today and he played a small game – so he is doing well.

“Yakou Meite is working on his fitness – he is getting there, but it’s going to be another couple of days before he starts in the group sessions, but that is good progress.  Stephen Quinn had a problem with his knee – he still isn’t completely fit, so have a look at the weekend at how he is.

“You want to have options in the squad because you want to look at the opposition that you’re playing against and what your strategy will be when you play them.  So it’s good to have certain options in the squad around who you’re going to be playing.”

USA international Danny Williams was a late returner to the group following his fixture with New Zealand on Wednesday morning.  Meanwhile, captain Paul McShane – who went away with the Ireland squad – will have his fitness assessed before the Loftus Road trip.

“Danny Williams is coming back today,” the manager said on Thursday.  “From the other players who have come back, Paul McShane has a slight problem so we have to see how he is.  The rest of the players are in good condition, so there are a lot of choices to be made.”
