John Swift talks ahead of his European Championship U21 qualifiers...Royals midfielder John Swift was delighted to receive another call-up for the England Under-21 squad ahead of their trip to Kazakhstan for Thursday’s U21 European Championship qualifier in Aktobe.
The 21-year-old was also called up last month, but was unable to travel due to injury - and naturally he was very pleased to be presented with the opportunity this time around.
England can secure qualification with a win against Kazakhstan, and they will host Bosnia-Herzegovina in their final group game on October 11th at Walsall's Bescot Stadium.
“I was a bit unlucky last time I got the call,” admitted Swift. “I had a bit of a hamstring injury and I didn’t want to risk it, but I’m buzzing that I’m in the squad again this time and to go and hopefully get some minutes.”
Swift is amongst a plethora of talent in the U21 squad, getting the call alongside former Chelsea teammates Nathaniel Chalobah, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tammy Abraham as well as Southampton’s Nathan Redmond and Leicester’s Demarai Gray.
The Royals man knows it will be difficult to break into the team, but if he gets the chance he will seize it with both hands.
“Every player that gets the call deserves to be there, so it’s a hard team to get in to,” said Swift. “I’m going to go and try my hardest and work 100% every single time I get to train and play and if I do get to play I’ll be ready and hopefully I get as many minutes as I can.
“I’ve just about stopped counting the amount of caps I had now! But think it’s all on the internet so when I’m curious and wonder how many I’ve had I’ll take a look on there!
“Every player wants to win every game, so when I get back hopefully we can approach the next lot of games like we have done in the past few weeks. We want to try and get another run together and keep getting the wins and keep moving up the table.”
