Last 16 opponent decided for the Royals…The EFL Cup fourth round draw has handed the Royals a tie against Arsenal at the Emirates!
The draw was made live on Sky Sports following the conclusion of Manchester United’s third-round win at the expense of Northampton.
The Gunners were our opponents on each of our last two appearances at this stage of the competition. Third time lucky…?!
They will, of course, offer formidable opposition. They only entered in round three, owing to their involvement in Europe, but swept Nottingham Forest aside with a 4-0 win.
Meanwhile our route to round four began at the first stage, and came courtesy of home wins against Plymouth and MK Dons – the latter requiring extra-time and penalties – before our ten men put paid to Brighton’s involvement at the Amex last night with a 2-1 win!
And now it’s a trip to the Emirates to face the North London giants!
Despite their success in recent decades, it is the one domestic trophy which still eludes Arsene Wenger. George Graham was the Gunners’ gaffer last time they lifted the trophy in 1993 – they have been to two finals since, but lost to Chelsea in 2007 and Birmingham in 2011.
Meanwhile, for the Royals, this tie offers us a chance to get our name into the hat for the quarter-final draw for just the third time in our history – and the very first time in the Madejski Stadium era.
All fourth round ties are scheduled to take place on the week commencing Monday 24th October. As ever, we will announce the date and time of kick-off, as well as full ticketing information, in due course.
