Stam ready to utilise squad against Seagulls

20 September 2016

Royals boss wants a strong squad to seize its opportunity in the EFL Cup in Brighton.

Reading boss Jaap Stam knows he will have to make a few changes to the Reading side that will face Brighton on Tuesday evening.

Following the dismissal of Garath McCleary, and Danny Williams’ suspension for an accumulation of yellows, the manager will give some of the rest of the squad some minutes against the Seagulls on Tuesday as the Royals look to progress to the Fourth Round of the EFL Cup.

“Obviously there will be a few changes against Brighton with Danny and Garath both suspended,” said the Dutchman. “We’ve got quite a big squad and a lot of quality players within the squad.

“Everyone needs to make their minutes so we need to have a look at what we’ll be doing against Brighton.”

The manager feels the squad has good strength in depth and that the game at the Amex will be a good opportunity for some players that have not been so heavily involved this season to show what they can do.

Brighton currently sit a place above the Royals in the Championship table, level on points. Following their 2-2 draw at Madejski Stadium all the stats suggest it will be a close tie on Tuesday evening as both sides vie to progress in the competition.

“Some of the players that weren’t involved against Barnsley are going to get their chance to play and show what they can do,” said the gaffer.

“It’s not easy for the substitutes, everyone who started against Barnsley did really well and then with ten men it’s not easy making substitutions. Attacking-wise especially, because with ten men it is not easy bringing on forwards because you need to defend.

“In the Brighton game the attacking players are going to get a chance to show themselves,” he continued. “The team did very well against Barnsley. They worked very hard and they did everything within their powers to win the game. We’ll be looking to carry that on at Brighton.”
