Swift: The squad are ‘buzzing with confidence’

21 September 2016

John Swift says the Royals are full of confidence ahead of Saturday's clash with table topping Terriers

Royals midfielder John Swift says there is a real confidence coursing through the squad after the team’s impressive run of five wins in six games in all competitions.

The prospect of league leaders Huddersfield Town visiting the Madejski Stadium on Saturday looms large on the horizon, but the 21-year old says Reading are approaching every game looking to win.

“The confidence is running through the team,” admitted Swift.  “All the boys are buzzing. Every game we go into we’re looking to win, there’s real confidence and we’re doing great at the moment.”

Swift, who netted his fourth goal of the season for the Royals against Brighton on Tuesday evening, is enjoying a fruitful spell in front goal and insists he wants to keep the run of good form going throughout 2016/17.

“It’s good to string a few goals together but it’s early in the season and I have to keep going,” said the midfielder. “It’s a big season and it’s a long season so hopefully I can get some more.”

The former Chelsea man was impressed with the Royals mentality when they went down to ten men again against Brighton, feeling the team showed real grit to grind out another hard fought result away from home.

“You’ve got to be really disciplined,” reflected Swift. “Every player on the pitch after we go a man down is very important, Brighton are a very good team and you can’t forget that.

“From the off we controlled the game, after the first goal we wanted to keep the pressure on and get another one. Obviously we got unlucky with another red card and we dug in again like we did against Barnsley.

“The second goal made us relax a little bit more,” he continued.  “They came back and got a goal but we managed to hold on. It was a nervous end to the game again, but the team showed great character to get the win.”
