Jaap Stam aware of Blackburn threat

Royals boss calls for another big effort from his side against Rovers

Reading boss Jaap Stam is expecting another close contest at Madejski Stadium this Tuesday, as the Royals welcome relegation threatened Blackburn Rovers to Berkshire in an important game for both clubs.

Despite Rovers’ lowly position, Stam is aware of Blackburn’s threat and their need to earn points at this stage of the season, with the two sides partaking in a dramatic contests at Ewood Park earlier in the campaign.

“It is going to be difficult because over there when we played them in Blackburn we had a very tough game,” said Stam.

“They made it very difficult for us in the way they played. They are in need of the points as well, so that means they will need to attack sometimes too during the game.

"We will try to take advantage of that, but we need to be aware of their qualities, because they might be down near the bottom of the table, but they have a good team.

Even after two good performances from the Royals, securing back-to-back wins over Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds, Stam and his squad are still striving to improve as we head into the final few weeks of the season.

“I’ve looked at us closely throughout the season and we have made a big improvement as a team,” said the manager. “Even if we play well and get results we still look over the negative aspects of our game, in how we were set up, and look at how we can improve.

“That helps us a lot especially heading towards the end of the season and making progress as a team. We’re doing that again ahead of the Blackburn game.

“They have quality players in their squad which will make them hard to beat,” Stam continued. “We need to give the same effort as we did against Leeds if we want to get a result.”
