Saturday's goalscorer on a big win over Leeds...Winning goalscorer Yann Kermorgant was delighted with what he described as a deserved win over Leeds on Saturday, in a game that he felt the Royals did the talking on the pitch.
Kermorgant’s rifled finish was the difference between the two sides at Madejski Stadium, with the Frenchman pleased to net yet another important winner for the club, taking his tally to 11 this campaign.
“It was all about the game and what happened on the pitch,” said Kermorgant. “The most important thing you can do as a team is to respond on the pitch and I think we did that well against Leeds and we fully deserved the win.
“It was another important goal for me and the team. It was massive because of how much we wanted to win, and scoring the only goal in a 1-0 makes it an important goal, but every goal is important as long as you win.”
The battle between fourth and fifth in the division saw the Royals leapfrog Leeds after earning a win, and Kermorgant believes the victory will stand Reading in good stead should they meet the Whites again in the Play-offs.
The striker spent the closing few minutes tracking back for the home side, helping to fend off late pressure from Leeds as they threw their defenders forward to try and grab a late equaliser.
“It was fourth against fifth and we were very close,” Yann admitted. “It was good test before the end of the season and hopefully a top six finish when maybe we will meet again. It was good to get the win at home too where we’ve been really consistent this season, so we really wanted to get the three points.
“When you are only 1-0 up, you need to dig in for the last five or ten minutes because the opposition have nothing to lose. They started to play the long ball into the box and put their centre-back upfront to try and nick something and get the draw.
“In that situation I had to help my teammates and track back to win things with my head. I will always do that if I’m asked.
“I think we’ve improved a lot even since the last time we’ve played Leeds,” Yann continued. “As a team we’ve changed out style of play from last season and now we are all really understanding what we have to do. We know before games, if we stick to the plan and carry it out properly we’ve got a good chance of winning.”
