Reading were defeated at Deepdale as Jordan Hugill's strike, midway through the first period, earned Preston North End a result.
There was a first appearance in Reading colours for Leandro Bacuna, but njuries to creative duo Liam Kelly and John Swift made things difficult for the Royals, who weren't able to force an equaliser.
