Reading’s Checkatrade Trophy campaign kicks off on Tuesday evening with the first of our three group games against Colchester United.
The competition is running in a similar format to last year – with a handful of small changes.
Like the other 15 clubs with Category 1 Academies who have entered, our team is officially an Under-21 side – that means we must name at least six U21 players in our starting XI. And, like last year, it’ll be three points for a win and one for a draw… and, if the teams do draw, a bonus point on offer for the winner of a penalty shoot-out which will follow!
This season, however, all of our group games will take place on the road. After visiting the Weston Homes Community Stadium this week, we will visit Southend United at Roots Hall in October before completing our group games the following month with a visit to Priestfield to play Gillingham.
Last season, using a team which overlapped with our U23 squad, we reached the third round, after coming through a group with Bristol Rovers, Portsmouth and Yeovil Town and knocking out Southampton’s Cat 1 Academy side in the second round. It was Yeovil Town, in our second meeting with the Glovers, who denied us a place in the quarter-final as we were defeated 4-2 at Huish Park.
But now the adventure begins all over again!
