We’re back at it again in midweek – Millwall offer the next test in the Carabao Cup, with a place in the hat for the third round on offer to the winner from our Madejski Stadium meeting this Tuesday.
The Royals reached round four last season in Jaap Stam’s first campaign as Reading boss… he hopes that they can progress again this time around against their fellow Championship side and begin to get that winning feeling back after slipping to defeat to Preston at the weekend.
“You want to do well in the cup,” Jaap said, “but Millwall are not a team that can be defeated easily.
“They’re a good side, and they play in a certain way which can make it difficult for a lot of teams, so again it’s going to be a test.
“We’re going to need to change our mindset because after defeat against Preston we want to do well in our next game.
“Of course the cup game is next and we need a result to get to the next round. It’s not going to be easy but we’re going to try!”
There was a youthful complexion to the team which beat Gillingham in the last round; 10 of the squad were formerly from our Academy setup.
And there could be involvement from some of those players once again when the Lions visit… partly because there were a few bumps and bruises for some of our starters at Deepdale at the weekend.
“We need to have a look at what we can do with the players between now and then,” continued the Royals gaffer.
“Both Liam Kelly and John Swift came off injured against Preston, and we don’t know what their physical state will be for Tuesday. So we will have to see on Monday who will be playing.”
